Holistic care delivered with compassion - supporting families with Dementia

As professional nurses and specialists in Alzheimer’s and related dementia care for many years, we could see what was happening long before news anchors and health care policy makers and families realized what was happening. People are living longer, but they can begin to show symptoms relatively early in life.

We could see the result in our own caseloads over the years. Already, there are about 750,000 Canadians living with dementia; this number may rise to 1.4 million by 2031, says the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

We saw the trend coming and have seen firsthand the heartbreaking situation of of family caregivers who do not have the benefit of years of professional nursing expertise, who nonetheless sacrifice so much in an effort to maintain their parents’, spouses or siblings’ declining quality of life.

Many times, their own needs went on the backburner. Work, family life, personal relationships – all would fall by the wayside. But even with the best of effort and extraordinary dedication, it can be overwhelming. We knew we had to help.
